Be the Change

Galileo Project Work: Slavery

Today there are over 27 million slaves in the world, more than all the slaves who were stolen during the four centuries of Transatlantic Slave Trade combined! While slavery is illegal in every country on earth, it still exists on every continent except Antarctica. Most of the modern slaves are held in debt bondage, where a person can be owned for as little as $40 in some areas. Other slaves are held as child soldiers, sex slaves and trafficked persons. Most of the people affected are female.

In September, our students were introduced to the issue of slavery in our modern era. Issues and examples were presented and discussed. Students were then challenged to research an issue regarding modern slavery and become an "expert" on that topic. Once they felt they knew their topic they were to create something which would promote awareness among their peers. Their project must incorporate technology and have the potential to be shared with a wider audience.

Students who want to go further with their project learning were challenged to find a way to raise funds to make a difference. They also have the task of finding a reputable organization to deal with if they chose to fundraise.

Term projects are posted and hosted by the Galileo Project on-line. This site keeps our work organized, and the curriculum posted.
